Giving Time to Christ Church

Being part of the family

Our vision at Christ Church is to play our part in growing the Kingdom of God in Clifton, Bristol and beyond.

We believe the Kingdom of God grows as people are

  • welcomed into a family of believers where people are allowed to be real, and encouraged to honour and care for one another;
  • restored in their identity as children of our loving Father God in supernatural encounter with Jesus through his Holy Spirit;
  • empowered to reproduce the character, life and works of Jesus and so bring Kingdom culture, influence and transformation into every sphere of life, and especially where God has placed us day by day.

One way this can happen is for each of us to play our part by using the gifts, skills and passions which God has given us to serve and bless the wider family of the church.

On this page you will find brief descriptions of some of the ministry areas at Christ Church where you can get involved.  As you read through them do be praying about which areas the Lord may be prompting you to explore further - there are contact details for each area so you can find out more.

Serving on a team is not only a fulfilling experience, it's also a great way to get connected, meet people and feel part of the life of the church.

But please don’t feel constrained by the ministries listed.  At the bottom of this page there’s a simple form where you can tell us a bit more about yourself, your gifts and passions and where you would like to get involved.  The questions are deliberately open ended, so please tell us how you would like to serve and one of us will get in touch with you.

Opportunities for Service

The Finance Team monitor the funds of the church, brief the PCC on our income and expenditure, prepare and recommend the annual budget and provide advice on decisions affecting our finances. We also prepare the year end accounts and brief the church family at the annual parish council meeting. We would love to have people join us to help watch over the coffee shop finances or to do some year end checking to help with the annual accounts.  There are many different ways you could help - one-off little tasks or recurring ones.  You don't need to be an accountant - common sense is the main thing!

The heart of Senior's Ministry is showing God's compassion to ALL the family, from the cradle to the grave (Isaiah 46: 4). We seek to do that in several ways. Firstly we organise regular events for seniors throughout the week: once a month we have Seniors' Sunday lunch, several daytime home groups and the Monday Fellowship. We also run a weekly Wednesday Community Centre which aims to draw in members from the church and the community. Thirdly we organise teams of people to run these events and to give lifts. Finally we seek to deepen the pastoral care for the seniors by getting alongside them through visiting, taking home communions, helping in practical ways where we can. We want to seek new ways of drawing in members of our ageing community.  We're looking for people with a heart for seniors, for those with a passion for cooking meals, or a passion to help in practical ways. We would value your prayers to develop our work among seniors at church and in the community.

For many years, we have welcomed to Christ Church visitors from all parts of the world. We have had meals and outings together and endeavoured to link up our international visitors with members of the church family so they have an opportunity to experience home hospitality and see a bit more of the local area.  There is an International Homegroup on Thursdays and another group on Wednesdays.  There is a wonderful team of helpers who organise, cook, and help set up and host the lunches during the year. However, we are always on the lookout for more! - particularly for members of the church family to provide hospitality and friendship to two or three visitors either in their homes or by taking them to visit a local attraction.

The Spire
Coffee Shop

The Spire Coffee Shop provides a space for the community to relax and connect within the wonderful environment of our church building and with great coffee. The Spire Coffee Shop is looking for people who love meeting and serving others. Roles include setting up, operating the coffee machine, loading the dishwasher, running the till, serving customers and closing duties, but above all chatting to people and helping them feel at home. We also have an apron washing rota.

Locking Up

Lock Up Rota covers both the 10 and the 5 Gatherings. Every Sunday we have volunteers who offer to lock up the church after each Gathering, staying on after everyone else has left to do so. The team would appreciate some more volunteers to share the load so they are on the rota less often. If this role would be of interest to you please get in touch.

Every Thursday we provide a fun, relaxed, welcoming space for mums, grandparents, nannies and children under three to enjoy. It's a place for them to meet others to find support and friendship. Most of the people who come to Toddlers are living locally, so it's a great way for us to connect with the local community. We would love more people to come and help with the general running of the group, chatting to the mums, building relationships, and making and serving coffee. (Note: We take safeguarding seriously at Christ Church and so all those who work directly with children at Christ Church need a DBS check).

Are you passionate about helping the church communicate effectively internally, to the church family and externally to the community via printed material, social media and the website? If you have any design, advertising or marketing experience or are interested in any aspect of communications, please get in touch.

Cleaning and

This is a satisfying and varied ministry, dealing with a wide range of needs, involving many skills and gifts. Tasks include: cleaning, tidying, repairing, disposal of rubbish,  gardening, painting, lost property, storage, talking to visitors, replenishing supplies, and twice annually 'Big Clean Days'. There’s a huge scope for all kinds of abilities. We work individually and as a team and meet on Mondays from 9am to approx. 12 noon. Refreshments in the form of copious supplies of cake and coffee are available, when mid morning, we sit together as a team, to chat, listen, provide pastoral support for each other, sometimes praying - and always lots of laughter! Social occasions, when we 'do something different' as a group occur at least twice annually.

Do you love worship and computers?  Can you remember the lyrics to obscure songs?  Then you will love operating the projection system during the Sunday gatherings.  We are currently looking for more people to join the team for the 5pm gathering, so please get in touch.

Do you have a passion to see children grow in their faith?  Do you enjoy being around children?  Are you enthusiastic and energetic? Do you enjoy music or crafts?  Can you wash up?  The Children’s  Ministry Team resources both Kids Church on Sunday mornings and our one-off and regular mid week children’s activities and events.  If you would like to get involved, either directly in up-front kids work, or behind the scenes with administration or practical support then we would love to hear from you.  (Note: We take safeguarding seriously at Christ Church and so all those who work directly with       children at Christ Church need a DBS check).

Family News

Church Family News is an important part of all of our Sunday gatherings and essential for keeping the church family aware of what is going on in the life of the church. With recent changes and innovation there are now more opportunities to get involved than ever before. If you have a passion for         communication then we’d love for you to get involved as a presenter of the news. Maybe you’d like to get creative and play around with directing and filming? Or, for the technically minded, there’s the video editing.

We are mums who meet for daytime Bible study, fellowship and prayer in mums' homes. Although younger babies stay with their mums, we aim to have a crèche, usually in the room next-door to where the mums are meeting. This can be a spiritual lifeline for mums who are often sleep deprived and who are in a season that can be demanding and overwhelming. The groups meet in the mornings on Mondays and Fridays and more crèche helpers would be really appreciated.  (Note: We take    safeguarding seriously at Christ Church and so all those who work directly with children at Christ Church need a DBS check).

(Community &
Local Mission)

We support a number of local charities in prayer, financially and by volunteering. These include:     CRISIS CENTRE, which helps the most vulnerable and marginalised by running the Wild Goose cafe, Life-skills courses, East Bristol food-bank and Spring of Hope ladies night shelter;  HOPES PLACE,  working in schools to raise self-esteem and resilience, supporting teenagers with multiple adverse  circumstances; NETWORK, who offer Christian affordable counselling for everyone; ONE 25,            supporting street sex-working women to build new lives and FALCON CAMPS,  CPAS run camps to bless young people facing disadvantage with life-changing holidays.  We also support the Sisters of the Church, BISC and Caring at Christmas through our brown bags. As well as our Breakfast Run we are part of the Bristol Soup Run, and as part of Churches Together Clifton, Cotham and Redland we do the Saturday lunch runs in December.

The Church office is a vibrant hub of administrative support to the whole Church with a great existing small team of volunteers. The key areas which the office supports are Sunday Gatherings, Life Events, Church Events, and other church ministry areas.  The office has a number of specific areas in which we would appreciate support. WEEKLY OFFICE BASED ROLES: Organising Sunday Gatherings, Communications; Notice Sheets, PowerPoint Notices and Flyers; WEEKLY HOME BASED ROLE: Web support with ministry areas i.e. Family Ministry; SUNDAY OPERATIONS ROLE (NEW): Join a rota of volunteers who carry responsibility to help practically facilitate and organise Sunday Gatherings. If any of these roles are of interest to you, please contact us.

The Breakfast Run provides hot and cold food and drinks for the homeless. We meet every Saturday morning at Christ Church in teams of four or five at 6.30am then take the prepared food and drink down to the bus station in town.  We offer friendship with empathy and sensitive listening to those in need before returning to church for a quick clean up.  “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Mat25: 40).

Come and learn how to arrange flowers. We need people to provide and arrange flowers on a 2-3 monthly rota and be able to help with the festivals. If you are interested please sign the helpers list on the stall. If you would like to contribute towards the cost of flowers for a particular occasion please sign the contributions sheet on the stall with the relevant date.

Do you enjoy cooking? Much of the church's ministry is accompanied by a good meal. Cooks provide 2 or 3 course meals for numbers from around 25 to 100 plus. Meals are at lunchtime or in the evenings and serve the Community Centre, Marriage courses, Alpha, International visitors children's and Youth events and sometimes whole church events. Our kitchen is well equipped for these numbers and working with a small team of helpers it is good fun. If you are able to help in this way regularly or occasionally, as a cook or cook's assistant, please get in touch .

Welcome and

Welcoming people of all ages and cultures into our church is so important. It gives them an immediate ‘feel’ of the church as they come through the door. We have fantastic welcome teams at all our gatherings who arrive half an hour early and are then ready to warmly welcome everyone, give out leaflets, offer any help needed and look out for those who are new. The welcome team help tidy up at the end and are generally alert through the service in case any help is needed. We have had amazing stories of how our welcome has affected people so positively. Our newcomers say when looking for a new church ‘welcome and warmth’ are at the top of what they are looking for. If you love welcoming, talking to people, being part of a team (each team has a team leader) then this really is a most exciting Kingdom ministry to be in, so do sign up to join us.

Our youth ministry serves those between the ages of 11-18. Pathfinders is our Sunday morning     ministry which is geared specifically for our 11-14 year olds. This is such an important ministry area as many people leave the church during this age. Meeting Point is our Friday night youth session for those older youth aged between 14-18. We have a lot of fun with social activity, teaching and worship too. We are always looking for new leaders with a passion to raise up the next generation!

Our worship ministry is a key part of the life of our church both during the week at various things and our Sunday gatherings too. We have a growing team of musicians who meet collectively once each term and have a passion to worship God, to lead others in worship and to be creative too. We love to welcome new musicians with a passion to worship God into our team. If that is you then please contact Chris on the email provided to arrange to meet, have a chat and to play your instrument too.

We are a group who share fellowship, interests and ideas; and discover together our creative selves as disciples of Christ. We encourage the use of the creative languages in worship, personal growth and mission. In terms of our collaborations many have valued, for instance, Ian Wedd's drama contributions, Helena Whitwell's work for the Artisan Christmas Market and the artistry of Mark Orriss, Walter Dirks and Charles Kinsey presented in exhibitions. The group is open to all. We are looking for team helpers for one off missional projects including Erica Bebb's ministry in the city.
